Class I Safety Vests are for workers whose activities permit them full and undivided attention to approaching traffic. Optimum visibility in uncomplicated backgrounds where vehicle and moving equipment speeds do not exceed 25 MPH.
Class II Safety Vests provide a higher level of visibility which is desired when employees are performing tasks that draw their attention away from approaching vehicle traffic and when traffic is moving over 25 mph but less than 50 mph.
Class II Safety Vests are for occupational activities where the risk levels exceed those of a Class I:
* Greater visibility is desired during bad weather
* There are complicated backgrounds
* Employees are performing tasks that draw their attention away from approaching vehicle traffic
* Vehicle or moving equipment speeds exceed those needed for Class I Safety Vest
* Work activities take place closer to vehicle traffic
Class III Safety Vests provide the highest level of visibility and are intended for workers that are exposed to much higher vehicle speeds and or reduced sight distances.
* The Class III safety vest is also for for the worker and vehicle opeator that have high task loads, clearly placing the worker in danger
* The wearer must be visible through the full range of body motions at a minimum of 390 meters (1,280 feet) and must be identifiable as a person.
Examples of workers who use Class III Safety Vests:
