A confined space is defined as an area which has adequate size and configuration for employee entry: has limited means of access or egress; and is not designed for continuous employee occupancy. According to OSHA, if a "permit required" confined space of 5 feet or more exists a retrieval system, comprised of non entry rescue equipment, must be used. OSHA also mandates the use of personal protective equipment (ie. full-body harnesses) in "permit required" confined spaces.

Permit required confined spaces, 1910.146(3) in order to facilitate non entry rescue, retrival systems or methods shall be used whenever an authorized entrant enters a permit space, unless retrieval equipment would increase the overall risk of entry or would not contribute to the rescue of the entrants.

Examples of confined spaces include: tanks, silos, storage bins, process vessels, pipelines, sewers, double hulls, underground utility vaults, boilers, pits and vats.

Confined space rescue retrieval equipment is only a part of a properly managed confined space entry program. Contact your OSHA office to learn more.
