Lifeline Fall Protection Systems

Guardian offers a variety of vertical and horizontal rope and cable systems as well as rope and cable grabs. Vertical lifeline rope assemblies are most commonly used in residential applications where horizontal rope and cable lifeline assemblies are commonly seen in commercial applications.

It is critical that when prior to installing a Horizontal Lifeline, temporary or permanent, that a Qualified Person is available on site. OSHA states: "Qualified" means one who, by possession of a recognized degree, certificate, or professional standing, or who by extensive knowledge, training and experience, has successfully demonstrated his ability to solve or resolve problems relating to the subject matter, the work, or the project (fall protection).

Qualified Person & Horizontal Lifelines
One of the most critical roles a Qualified Person performs is the design, installation, and supervision of Horizontal Lifelines. The insight a QP provides is extremely valuable because there are many design and use factors involved with HLL systems, such as feasibility, swing fall, clear height distances, anchorage systems, personal fall protection systems, workplace activities, required worker mobility, and prompt rescue.

Potential Risks
The potential risk associated with a nondesigned system, installed without the guidance of a qualified person, is tremendous. If one worker were to fall and the other workers attached to the same system are pulled off, will the structure to which the HLL system is anchored withstand the horizontal and vertical forces a fall generates, resulting in a sudden failure of the anchorage and support structure. Did you know that the use of a 6ft. lanyard versus a SRL, create different impact forces on the system and varying arresting distances?

Other Design & Use Considerations
Don't forget, other design and use considerations include clear height distance, allowable cable sag, proper selection of personal fall arrest equipment, and specifications for the cable materials. Also, consider the possibility that you might need to rescue more than one worker, the more individuals on a system, the more rescue systems must be available.
